Monsters and SWEET Treats! :)

October has come and gone so quickly this year! We have been very busy art bees this month. We made monsters, owls, m&m's, and candy corn. My trick-or-treat wall turned out GREAT! My kids love seeing their art work displayed all over the classroom. Here are a few pictures of our artwork.
M&M men :)

Trick-or-Treat, Mrs. High's Class is really SWEET!

In Writing we read the book, I Need My Monster. This book is great and very similar to the movie Monsters Inc. After we read the book we made our own monsters off of a monster glyph. The monster glyph was as follows:
Body Color:  my favorite color
Leg Color:  Pink if I’m a girl
Blue if I’m a boy
Teeth: number of letters in my first name
Eyes: number of kids in my household
Horns: number matches my favorite subject:
1)         Math
2)        Reading
3)        Writing

Here are pictures of their monsters. They all turned out GREAT!!! :)

Trick-or-Treat, First Grade is REALLY sweet!

October is flying by and we have been very busy bees in first grade. Last week was fire prevention week and so we made firemen and wrote about ways to stay safe at home. The students did an awesome job on their firemen! Here are a few pictures for you!

This week we made M&M men for my Halloween wall. Next week we are going to make candy corn to go with my "Trick-or-Treat, First Grade is really sweet" wall!
They got to decorate the feet and hands themselves! My students are so creative and came up with some great ideas! I love how each one is so unique and different :)

Peanut M&M on the left and regular on the right!

Here is the candy corn we are going to make next week! Can't wait to have them all hanging up for conferences!

On a different note, next week we are hopefully going to get to blog about our favorite thing so far in first grade! It has been way to long since my students have had a chance to blog, but there is NO time ):
Have a GREAT week!

Having Fun in Hollywood! :)

This is SO sad that I am just posting some things from the beginning of the year but at least it is getting done now :).
Our theme in my classroom this year is Hollywood. At the beginning of the year I read several books about "stars". We read the books, Charlie Hits it Big, Dream Big, Little Pig, and  Stella is a Star.

My Students loved reading these books about animal stars and talking about star qualities. My students got to dress up like movie stars and then decorate their own star. I have these hanging up in my entry room.

Here are a few of my students dressed up like movie stars!

Here is a movie trailer that I made of all of my students dressed up like movie stars! Click on the red words, "Movie Star VIDEO!" to watch it.

Here are a few of my hollywood bulletin boards in my room.

This is my reading corner with all of our reading strategies on the posters.

Here is my star student bulletin board. I will not start using this until second semester.
Writing corner!

This is my NEWEST find for our hollywood room! I found this director's chair at an auction for $2.50 :). The auctioneer did not understand why I was so excited about an old director's chair! :) Each night I pick a student who has done a great job being safe, respectful, and responsible that day. That student gets to sit in the director's chair the next day!

Fire Safety and Owl Art

I found an ADORABLE owl art project on pinterest and thought I would try it out! We made owls by ripping brown paper and then we glued it to an owl pattern. They turned out so cute...even though it took an hour of ripping paper! :). Here are a few pictures of my students owls.

Next week is fire safety week. In class we will discuss fire safety and how my students can stay safe at home.   The fire department is going to come in and talk to our students about how to stay safe at home. We are going to do a writing/art project after the presentation. My students are going to make a fireman and write about ways that they can stay safe from fire at home. Here is an example of what our firemen will look like.

I can't wait to see how these turn out! I will post pictures of some of the finished firemen next week :).

What's new with Mrs. High?

Many times throughout the day I have students ask me what I do outside of school. Most of the time my answer has something to do with hanging out with my family.  This past weekend I went to Vala's Pumpkin Patch in Gretna. I had a blast with my nieces and it was so great to see my sisters and their families. Here are a few pictures from the weekend!

We want to help YOU!

Bucket filling is fun and easy to do! It makes everyone feel good and keeps a fun and positive atmosphere in my classroom. A few weeks ago we read the book, "Have You Filled a Bucket Today?" This book is great for teaching kids how their behaviors make others feel. Last week I video taped all of my students saying how they are bucket fillers.  This week we are starting our classroom bucket. Students will have a chance to write down how others filled their buckets during the day and we will read these during our morning meeting on Fridays. Click on the following link" Bucket Filling Video"  and you will be able to see my students saying how they are bucket fillers.

Here is a picture of our class bucket!

Here is an example of the sheets my students are going to turn into the bucket. If someone fills their bucket they are going to fill out one of the sheets and turn it into the bucket.
